I don’t know. The video adds an interesting dimension to the song by showing the reactions of random people to them playing in these various places. “Everybody here comes from somewhere” — oh, you mean *here*. REM has stuck with the basic rock formula(guitar/bass/drums) and they have created a lot of kick ass songs over the years…they have surpassed stupid trends and are one of the best bands ever.

Imagine you walked into a bar and saw a local band perform this song, they would get a short applause and you would, retreating from the bar after a quick drink, never think of them again. This song although not awful is at best average and inoffensive, at worst a bland pile of unnessacery shite , fuck you stipe I won’t be buying the new album.

Amazing Song!I don’t think there’s such a thing as a bad REM song, I mean I know that Reveal and Around the Sun weren’t the most exciting albums, but I find it hard to name a genuine ‘bad’ song on either of them. Even at their worst REM are better than most.

yet again another quality track ,yes bill is missed but with material like this the boys more than make up for his absence.look forward to the new album if this is nything to go by.
I agree. This really is nothing special. I think the fact that people are so enthused about this song confirms the band has slipped in recent years. Too be honest, this would just be an average song on some of REM’s best work.
The youthful, experimental, finding-themselves bits came in their 20’s and early 30’s. And resulted in a sort of guarded, private, we are going our own way, thanks for finding us, we promise more to come, genius.Since then, they have created some nuggets, and the fact that they continue to have a vibe, a buzz and spark of creativity and enthusiasm is, well, welcome.
“Supernatural superserious”???? Give me a break. This song sounds like it was lifted off of Monster, which was easily their second crappiest record. I hope the rest of the record doesn’t suck this bad or they’re truly washed up… Here’s the top 6:MurmurReckoningChronic TownLife’s Rich PageantDocumentUp

Odd choice :sI love their early stuff, but a lot of it’s enthralment is owed to his mumbling (Though the guitar is far more interesting than the current stuff…)But Automatic for the People and Out of Time were truly brilliant. I know they’re the standard choice of people who don’t actually listen to R.E.M., but they really are outstanding LPs.Also Chronic Town is technically an EP, so doesn’t really count. [/pedant]
College rock at its supremeI love michaels sigh at 0:49I think this is aimed at disturbed(Which many popular kids are) teenagers trying to make them forgot their insecurity and feel unserious and free
FINALLY, an REM song that SOUNDS LIKE REM. Thank you for dumping the sequencers and synthesizers, guys. At least on this song; we’ll wait and see what the rest of the album sounds like. You’re going to have to court me more than this to get me back, REM, but this is a nice bouquet to start with.Sincerely yours,long-time, long-disappointed fan
Like all today’s albums, this one sounds absolutely unlistenable. LOUD, compressed to hell, with no definition, no dynamics, no spaces within the music, etc. Mastered @ almost 0 dB all the time. Today’s music sounds like being mixed by 15 years old kids with computer programs.Sadly, the Loudness war seems to go on forever. What a pity, the songs are absolutely fantastic but the sound is god-awful. (and I’ve heard the album outside these compressed youtube clips).
Oh YES! I´m annoying my whole little German town with singing all the time, in every place I go there are certainly people who were already forced to listen to my private Supernatural Superserious performance! The only illness I don´t want a remedy for!
What a fascinating concept idea. This is as good as what Radiohead did in 2007. Congrats lads!.Now spread the word. This is so good! what a nice surprise for all of us.
I absolutely love this awesome proyect. Everything’s so perfect. After hearing a few leaked multitracks from other great bands and discovering unused vocals or instrumental bits or even complete outtakes (among other incredible surprises), I swear I thought I no one from the music world would be able to make me feel the same level of excitement. Now please deliver the Accelerate multitracks! Thanks
“Accelerate” will be very multilayer>composite>awesome!!!Also good tunes:-Living Well Is The Best Revenge-Mr.Richards-Hollow Man-Until The Day Is Done !!!April 1!!!
I am completely wrecked over the fact that I’ll be out of town when the band plays Red Rocks. There is no better live band, never has been. However great these songs are on record (yeah, I’m that old) they’ll be a hundred times better live.
You are so, so, so right!!! This album is actually quite good. It may not be one for the ages, but this is immensely much better than the most extremely greatest material from pretentious and untalented Miley Cyrus, Rhianna, Beyonce, that Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Britney Vanessa Huygens and Madonna.
“hugest problem is the lack of innovation”???!!!LoL!!!In present, here is no similar band that always makes completely new music like R.E.M., their each Album is differing whilst they stay totally genuine.I just recommend you to listen few new&olden. My regards!
3 chords …. um i would like to inform you that many bands songs use only three chords, the beatles used only three chords in many songs as do other bands, but lets not forget songs arent allways about the chords / music, its down to delivering good lyrics aswell, and by god michael stipe is a genius when it comes to lyrics, im sure most will agree,i must admit i wasnt struck on the monster album music wise, but lyrically,it was awesome, especially the song,, let me in, about kurt cobain (rip)
hey guys let me explain…i really appreciate them, and i love albums such as “out of time” or “automatic for the people”. but i think that they follow a “pattern”, a scheme in their songs , especially in their most “rock” songs (don’t you think that singles as “it’ the end of the world” or “bad day” are a little too similar? and so this “supernatural supererious”)
Parece que ha vuelto el mejor R.E.M. Después del fraude de Around the sun, este suena otra vez al R.E.M. auténtico. Esperemos al día 1 de abril para poder comprar el disco, y confirmar la buena impresión inicial.
same old REM to me. nothing new or catchy here. where is the ‘fall on me’ or ‘orange cursh’ moment? maybe their next album can be called “time to retire”?
Last night I’ve heard this song on the radio while I was driving in my car. I thought…what an energetic, nice song.Even though REM is my favourit band I didnt realize it was REM until it was finnished. How can they sound so fresh theese days??????
really great song! on the first chords(expecially on the radio that normalize every songs) seems like an “already heard” but instead is a relaxing-powerful song
i quite liked around the sun in particular leaving new york the outsiders and make it all ok but from what i’ve heard about accelerate its supposed to sound more like monster which along with out of time and automatic for the people was their best period
Hmmm.. I agree with you about their best three albums so I guess that we have the same musical tastes. I will re-listen to the songs that you listed. When Around the Sun was released– one month before the ‘04 election– I was in a very pissed off mood. I wanted something that was vitriolic. Now, like a dog that has suffered one too many shocks in a psychological experiment… “I have become comfortably numb.”ANYWAY, thanks.
I liked Around the sun album,I saw them in Cardiff and they still can rock a crowd!! At least they arent like some bands who disappear up their own arse’s and their ego’s arent the size of a small country.
You probably can - but REM and Nirvana fans alike should remember the mutual respect between the two bands. Apart from that, I’m excited by this song, because it sounds like the REM that I first fell in love with - great guitar driven / melodic songs that stay in your head for hours if not days.
That would be a good point if a) it made any sense whatsoever, b) it was expressed in English and c) you weren’t a moron. Come back and comment when you’ve finished puberty, testosterone boy. You’re not old enough to know anything about grunge whan it was happening so SHUT UP.
Just because I laugh at it doesn’t mean I agree with it.I find its pretentousness humorous. I didn’t even write it so they aren’t even my thoughts I just reacted to them.
I agree with wharfrat89. The music industry is dying and the only ones who seem to bring any fresh air in are long established artists like these guys.

I don’t know. The video adds an interesting dimension to the song by showing the reactions of random people to them playing in these various places. “Everybody here comes from somewhere” — oh, you mean *here*. Okay. Still, though, filming it in New York seems a bit lazy. Like, we’re used to thinking that everyone in New York has a story. But what if they went across the country and filmed random people, or asked people to send them their videos on youtube? People in Arkansas have stories too.

[/pedant]

3 chords …. um i would like to inform you that many bands songs use only three chords, the beatles used only three chords in many songs as do other bands, but lets not forget songs arent allways about the chords / music, its down to delivering good lyrics aswell, and by god michael stipe is a genius when it comes to lyrics, im sure most will agree,i must admit i wasnt struck on the monster album music wise, but lyrically,it was awesome, especially the song,, let me in, about kurt cobain (rip)

hey guys let me explain…i really appreciate them, and i love albums such as “out of time” or “automatic for the people”. but i think that they follow a “pattern”, a scheme in their songs , especially in their most “rock” songs (don’t you think that singles as “it’ the end of the world” or “bad day” are a little too similar? and so this “supernatural supererious”)

Hmmm.. I agree with you about their best three albums so I guess that we have the same musical tastes. I will re-listen to the songs that you listed. When Around the Sun was released– one month before the ‘04 election– I was in a very pissed off mood. I wanted something that was vitriolic.
